SoftBank Vision Fund elevates Sumer Juneja to managing partner

In line with its long-term focus on India, Japanese conglomerate SoftBank has elevated Sumer Juneja to managing partner at its Vision Fund among a host of top-level promotions worldwide.

SoftBank also elevated Lydia Jett in the US as the first female managing partner in the investment division at the $100-billion Vision Fund.

In addition, it promoted Vilas Parekh and Dennish Chang, who assume the role of managing partner based in Silicon Valley and China, respectively.

Mumbai-based Juneja is among the 13 managing partners in investing roles worldwide who report to Rajeev Misra, the chief executive officer of the Vision Fund.

Juneja, previously partner and head of India, will continue to lead the portfolio building for the SoftBank Vision Fund amid growing interest in Indian tech startups in what has been a record year of startup funding.

He is the second individual from India to be named managing partner; the first was Munish Varma, who has progressed to become managing partner of the Americas region.

A science graduate from the London School of Economics, Juneja joined SoftBank Vision fund in December 2018. He was previously with the US-based Norwest Venture Partners where he spent nearly a decade focusing on growth equity and venture investments in Indian companies across sectors such as telecom, technology, financial services, infrastructure and manufacturing.

Before joining Norwest, Juneja worked for Goldman Sachs, where he began his career. He was a founding member of Goldman Sachs’ Asian Special Situations Group in India, a balance sheet investing group with over $4 billion under management.

SoftBank is one of the biggest investors in Indian tech startups. Some of Juneja’s investments during his 17-year career include Swiggy, Quikr, Indusind Bank, Shriram City Union Finance, Cholamandalam Finance, Kotak Mahindra Bank, National Stock Exchange and Sadbhav Infrastructure.
